Body butter and balm formulations can sometimes feel too heavy due to the portion of wax that is needed to keep the balm or butter stiff. Jojoba Esters, which are made from hydrogenated Jojoba, can help solve this common formulation issue. Jojoba Esters can be used to substitute a portion of wax in a balm, butter, or bath melt formula to reduce its heaviness. They can also be used in creams or lotions to help thicken or stiffen the emulsions. They are available in a variety of hardnesses. Jojoba Esters 20 (MP44), which are the softest of the three esters carried by FromNatureWithLove.com, look similar to a vegetable butter and are soft enough to scoop with a spoon. Next in line are the Jojoba Esters 60 (MP56). These esters also have a butter-like appearance, but are harder in texture than the 20 esters. Jojoba Esters 70 (MP70) are so solid that they resemble Jojoba Wax Beads rather than butter. This variety of esters allows formulators to add as much or as little hardness to their recipe as needed.

This looks like a wonderful product, do you have any suggested ratios or recipes for trying this product out? Do you have any customer reviews about the product or know how other customers have used it? Thanks.

Jojoba Esters are great ingredients and can help to give that finishing touch to many formulations. Because they are intended to be used to adjust a recipe, there isn’t really a recommended usage rate that would apply to every recipe. However, I would personally recommend that you start off by incorporating around 5-10% and then experiment until your product gets to the perfect consistency. Of course, the ester that you choose will also determine how much you’ll need to add.
Our Jojoba Esters range from a relatively soft MP44 (Which has a texture close to that is slightly harder than Coconut Oil or Aloe Butter) to a rock hard MP70. (MP70’s texture is closer to that of a Jojoba Wax Bead or a Candelilla Wax) We also offer a mid-range of hardness in our MP56 Jojoba Ester.
If any of our other readers have had experience using Jojoba Esters please feel free to chime in! What have you used Jojoba Esters for? I have used it to harden balms, bath melts, and lotions.

I am so glad to see you sell these jojoba wax esters. I was considering them for the face since I was jot sure if I can use beeswax on the face.
I am assuming the jojoba esters have the properties of jojoba oil. Is that right?
Thanks, Pavitra

Thanks for your question, Pavitra.
Although beeswax can certainly be used in products made for the face, the jojoba esters can be used in conjunction with beeswax in creams, lotions, balms, etc. to reduce the waxy feel and impart the moisturizing properties of jojoba.
Add 2-15% to the oil phase of emulsions to add a nice slip to your products. It will be necessary to experiment with the ratios to see what suits your preference, but generally, 5-10% is nice in a cream.

I’m thinking of making a sort of BB cream, (one that is DIY, natural and actually worksXD) and I am still researching many different ingredients. I would like my product to be mostly skincare, with just a touch of actual pigment, so I am not looking for anything particularly thick. In your opinion, should I use beeswax in my base, or these jojoba esters? And if the esters, which hardness do you think would be best?
The Natural Beauty Workshop says
If you are incorporating a wax as an emulsifier, Beeswax would be the more traditional choice. If the purpose of the wax is to simply firm up the product (as in a balm or water-free butter formulation) than Jojoba Esters MP70 are a great choice. Jojoba Esters provide a hard texture with a less waxy/sticky feel than Beeswax.

Hi there,
Thanks for visiting The Natural Beauty Workshop. The Jojoba Esters 20 have been discontinued. At this time the only Jojoba Esters that we carry are the MP70 which can be found here: http://www.fromnaturewithlove.com/soap/product.asp?product_id=OTHJOJOEST70US87
Thanks again for your message. Well certainly keep your interest in mind as we make future decisions on product selection. If we can help with anything else, please let us know.
