Finely ground Walnut Shells make an extremely stable and effective exfoliant. Walnut Shell Powder can be added to soaps, scrubs, or even fresh exfoliation treatments. This pale tan powder is available at FromNatureWithLove.com in two different grain sizes. Our Medium Walnut Shell Powder is superb for pedicure scrubs, crafter’s soaps, or any other formula that requires intensive scrubbing and exfoliation. Though the Fine Walnut Shell Powder is equally as hard as the Medium, it has a smaller particle size, making it a better choice for body or facial scrubs.

How would I make a facial scrub with walnut shell powder using a liquid face soap or cleansing crème. Is it necessary to add some kind of a biocide to prevent mold? If so what should be used. Would tea tree oil or lavender oil be suitable, and at what ratio?

Hi Harold. I would recommend starting off with your base, then adding an exfoliant, like Walnut Shell Powder to it. You can try formulating a liquid soap or a facial cream as a base, or you can try working with a pre-made base instead. We carry both cream and liquid soap bases at http://www.fromnaturewithlove.com. As for preservation, most recipes that include water or any ingredients that contain water or are water-based do require a preservative. Often essential oils are not enough to act as effective preservatives.
