Lately my skin has been going absolutely crazy. I think it’s a combination of the changing weather and pregnancy hormones. Whatever the cause, the result is a whole new body of skin that is so sensitive that I can barely tolerate even the most basic bath and body products. Even my everyday cold processed, unscented, undyed bar soap is making me itch.
While researching body wash recipes for the baby on the way, I came across a method of diluting Castile Soap with Hydrosols and Aloe. These super-diluted liquid soaps are very gentle, and can be customized to suit your skin type by switching out the Hydrosol. The recipe I’m sharing here is perfect for anyone experiencing very sensitive skin. In fact, this would be a great recipe for kids.
Witch Hazel, Aloe, Cistus (Rock Rose), and German Chamomile all have remarkable abilities to soothe and heal, providing some much needed relief for dry, itchy skin. By diluting the soap, we also help make it less drying and easier to rinse, decreasing leftover residue to irritate the skin after bathing. If you’d like to dress this recipe up with a slightly more floral scent, try swapping out 2 ounces of the Aloe Vera Gel with Rose or Neroli Hydrosol.
Rock Rose & Chamomile Body Wash For Super Sensitive Skin
Makes sixteen ounces
Ingredients
- 4 ounces Liquid Castile Soap
- 4 ounces Witch Hazel Hydrosol
- 4 ounces Aloe Vera Gel
- 2 ounces Cistus Hydrosol
- 2 ounces German Chamomile Hydrosol
Directions
- Mix the ingredients together in a small bowl or beaker.
- Pour into a bottle.
Usage & Packaging
This body wash has a very mild lather, so it works best when applied to a pouf, scrubby, or washcloth. It works very well in our Disc Cap or Snap Cap Bottles, but is a bit too thin for a pump.

This would smell gorgeous and be very soothing. I had exactly the same thing happen with my last pregnancy and couldn’t use anything I hadn’t made. Good luck!

Hi!
I’m wondering if I can replace the Cistus Hydrosol & German Chamomile Hydrosol with boiled chamomile tea????
The Natural Beauty Workshop says
Hi Jodi. That’s a great idea! I would definitely give that a try and see how you like it.

I am wondering if lye is considered safe and natural for using in skin products?
The Natural Beauty Workshop says
Soaps made with natural ingredients and lye are generally considered natural products. The main reason being that the lye evaporates from the soap as it cures. I’m not sure how a product other than soap would be using lye or whether it would be considered natural in a case other than soap, but I hope this helps. If you have any other questions please let me know.
