Rich, luscious Cocoa Butter is blended with moisturizing Hazelnut Oil in this light and fluffy whipped lip butter. The optional addition of Brown Jojoba Wax Beads gives this butter a warm reddish-brown tint, but the butter is equally delicious when left it’s natural golden color.
Our Pure, Prime Pressed Cocoa Butter gives this lip balm a subtle sweet chocolate aroma which can be enhanced with a small amount of your favorite lip-safe Essential Oil, Plant-Based Fragrance Oil, or Flavor Oil. We used a little bit of our Organic Vanilla CO2 Extract to give this formula a cookie-sweet scent. Some other great ideas for scent would be our Honey Creme Plant-Based Fragrance Oil or our Peppermint Essential Oil.
Variations: This basic formula can easily be customized to create any color or scent of whipped lip balm you like. Try using our Deodorized Cocoa Butter with a different colored Jojoba Wax Bead and aromatic ingredient to create a totally different kind of lip butter. For example, why not try using Red Jojoba Wax Beads with our Cherry Plant-Based Fragrance Oil to create a whipped cherry lip butter? You could even replace the Hazelnut Oil with Cherry Kernel Oil!
Tips: The key to achieving a light and fluffy texture in your lip butter is getting the whipping just right. The butter needs to be evenly cooled and whipped continuously until it hardens just enough to form peaks. The butter can then be transferred to a pastry bag and piped or carefully scooped into jars. Personally, my pastry bag skills are sadly lacking so after several attempts to create cupcake-worthy peaks I settled on scooping the lip butter into a jar. Hopefully you will have better luck than I did with your piping!
Cocoa Hazelnut Whipped Lip Butter
Makes about 4 ounces by volume
Ingredients
- 60 grams Cocoa Butter
- 45 grams Hazelnut Oil
- 10 grams Beeswax
- 5 – 10 grams Brown Jojoba Wax Beads (optional)
- 2.5 ml (1/2 teaspoon) Organic Vanilla CO2 Extract (optional)
Directions
- Combine the Cocoa Butter, Beeswax, and Jojoba Wax Beads in a double boiler and heat until fully melted.
- Remove the product from heat, then add the Hazelnut Oil. Stir well, then add the Vanilla CO2 Extract.
- Whip the mixture using an electric hand-mixer for 3-5 minutes. Stop and scrape the sides, then continue to mix until the product cools, lightens in color, and forms stiff peaks. This may take anywhere from ten to fifteen minutes or longer.
Tip: The last step can be sped up by sitting the mixing container in a tub of ice water. Just keep in mind that you will have to move very quickly as the butter will harden much faster. Try alternating whipping the mixture in and out of the ice bath as it cools to slow things down.
Usage & Packaging
The whipped mixture can be scooped into jars or piped into jars using a pastry bag and tip. These lip butters look great in our 1 ounce Clear Dome Jars or our 1 ounce PET Jars.
Apply the lip butter directly to your lips whenever they are feeling dry. Keep in mind that this butter is softer than most other lip balms and will melt easily in hot weather.
The butter should last three to six months as is but its stability can be reinforced by the addition of an antioxidant, such as Vitamin E T50 or Rosemary Oil Extract.

Can I use Candelilla wax instead to make it vegan friendly?
Kelly Owens says
Hello Michelle, Yes! Candelilla wax is a great choice as a vegan alternative. As Candelilla is a harder wax, you will need less than would need for Beeswax. We recommend dropping the wax amount about 20% for starters when testing.

Thank you!
