Tinted lip balms are one of the easiest mineral makeup recipes to master. By starting off with a reliable base and learning to blend custom colors using mineral-based colorants, you can formulate an endless variety of gorgeous sheer lip colors.
This recipe uses a blend of Clear Jojoba Oil, Castor Oil, and Nilotica Shea Butter to create a creamy, semi-soft lip balm that glides easily onto the lips. Jojoba is an excellent lip-care ingredient due to its long shelf life and inherent stability. Castor Oil thickens the texture, providing a rich, slippery sheen to the mix. Nilotica Shea Butter provides a dose of nourishing moisture to this base, while Lecithin increases adhesion to the lips. Beeswax is used to harden the balm and bind the ingredients together.
When it comes to making lip color, my favorite ingredients are Pearlescent Micas. These colorful powders are made from mixing crushed mica powder with a variety of both natural and synthetic dyes and colorants. You can make lip tints with just one mica, or you can create your own original colors by blending multiple micas together. Just be sure to check on the safety of each mica before using it. Not all Pearlescent Micas are approved for use in lip care. You can use our handy Mica Safety Chart to quickly check on any mica you’d like to use.
To make the colors pictured above, I used the following micas, (from left to right):
- Rouge Flambe Mica
- Tangerine Mica and Pink Glimmer Mica
- Jeweltone Tan Opal Mica with Pink Glimmer Mica and Rouge Flambe Mica

Shelf life?
Kelly Owens says
This formulation should be good for approximately 1 to 2 years, as the ingredients in this formulation are stable and there is no water present.
Angel says
Hello. How about if there is water? How long will it last?
Kelly Owens says
Hello Angel, This type of product wouldn’t typically include water. If you are adding water to any product and selling, you would want to add a preservative. Otherwise, it would be best to use the product within 5 to 7 days.

Hi can I ask a question? Can I used tube applicator for this?
Kelly Owens says
Hello Jobelle, Thank you for your question. For a lip tube with applicator, you would want to increase the recommended amount of liquid oils in order to have a thinner consistency.

Hi, What preservatives can u add to make it last for month?

Hello Zeereta, While the finished product is considered to be shelf-stable as is, you can choose an oil-soluble preservative from, http://www.fromnaturewithlove.com on this page.
vamika jain says
hi can i make these and sell them ? will they last ?
and what to do if i want a liquid consistency
Kelly Owens says
Hello Vamika, You can make these to sell, to gift or for personal use. It’s up to you! These formulations are considered shelf-stable, but you can add an oil-based preservative to help with oil oxidation. To make this into a liquid, increase the recommended amount of liquid oils until you achieve your desired consistency.
Vamika Jain says

Hello Vamika, here is a list of the preservatives offered by From Nature With Love, the owner and operator of this blog: https://www.fromnaturewithlove.com/soap/Preservatives.asp They will note whether or not they are oil soluble versus water soluble.
