Adding custom Oil Cleansers to your skin care line is an easy way to expand your product offerings without a lot of heavy-duty formulation. This is because oil cleansers use a simple ratio of Castor Oil and moisturizing Carrier Oils to work.
Simply pick the right ratio for the skin type you are formulating for and choose a carrier oil that matches the needs as well. Mix the oils together and VIOLA, you have a custom made product in moments.
Base Recipes
The basic recipes for Oil Cleansers are as follows.
For Normal Skin
- 1 part Castor Oil
- 4 parts Carrier Oil
For Dry Skin
- 1 part Castor Oil
- 9 parts Carrier Oil
For Oily Skin
- 3 parts Castor Oil
- 7 parts Carrier Oil
Mix the oils together in a small bottle, and shake them up to make sure they are totally blended.
How to Choose Ingredients
Castor Oil
Choosing a really great quality Castor Oil is key. We carry three varieties at From Nature With Love.
Carrier Oil
For your carrier oil, you can choose one carrier oil to make up the entire portion, or you can use a blend. Just pick oils that suit the skin type you are formulating for – just as you would if you were blending a moisturizing facial oil. The possibilities for this portion of the recipe are wide open, but we’ve included some of our favorite suggestions below.
- Apricot Kernel Oil
- Argan Oil
- Berry Seed Oils (Acai, Blueberry or Red Raspberry)
- Chia Seed Oil
- Macadamia Nut or Kukui Nut Oil
- Maracuja (Passion Fruit) Oil
- Rose Hip Seed Oil
- Sacha Inchi Oil
- Virgin Coconut Oil
Aromatics & Additives
You can customize your cleanser even further by adding between 1-2% Essential Oil or CO2 Extract or 5-10%+ of a specialty Carrier Oil. Again, just think about which ingredients would enhance the purpose of the custom product.

- Chamomile Essential Oil
- Geranium Essential Oil
- Helichrysum Essential Oil

Hi Mary Helen, if I use an oil cleanser and use a cold pressed oil serum, followed by an anhydrous cream with butters, oils and essential oils… is that over the top? I also use a hydrosol. It’s just that I can’t use any surfactants or aloe vera which most cleansers contain. Do you have a recipe for a all natural cleansing balm? I just ordered your book on Amazon. Thank you
