The concept of cleansing one’s face with oils and fats is something that has taken the beauty world by storm. Oil cleansers and cleansing balms offer a deep down clean by helping to dissolve oils that builds up and clogs the pores. Formulators have discovered that this concept can be customized endlessly by swapping out carrier oils, adding extracts and essential oils, and by working with specialty castor oils like our Organic Castor Oil or our Black Castor Oil.
Cleansing balms combine the benefits of oil cleansers with the ease of use of a solid balm or cold cream. These formulations rely on solid oils, such as coconut or babassu to give them texture and body. For added firmness, jojoba esters or wax can be added as well.
Take a look at the following cleansing balms offered by popular clean beauty brands for inspiration on crafting your own.

Our Favorite Cleansing Balm Ingredients
Andean Mint Essential Oil
Andean Mint Essential Oil is an extra potent heirloom herb responsibly harvested from the mountains of Peru. The fresh, cool aroma and tingling chill of Andean Mint makes this cleansing balm recipe extra refreshing!
Organic Babassu Oil
Our organic babassu oil is a nourishing and hydrating semi-solid vegetable oil pressed from the babassu palm. Rich in lauric acid, babassu is an excellent choice for conditioning skin and hair. Babassu adds a light and moisturizing aspect to cleansing balms while increasing firmness and body.
Black Castor Oil
Black Castor Oil is pressed from the same type of seeds that make pale pressed castor oil. The rich, dark color of black castor oil comes from the seeds being roasted before the press. The roasted seeds produce a castor oil with an extra deep color and more robust aroma.
Organic Castor Oil
Castor oil plays a very important role in oil cleansers and cleansing balms. This oil is highly comedogenic, meaning that it can actually blocks pores. This would be detrimental in a moisturizer or skin cream, but in an oil cleanser castor oil works to dissolve excess sebum and carry it away from the skin when it is rinsed.
Lavender Bud Select CO2 Extract
A classic ingredient for natural beauty products, lavender makes an excellent addition to cleansing balms. Lavender has long been used to provide cleansing and soothing benefits to balms, soaps, and lotions.
Lemon Balm (Melissa) Essential Oil
Also known as lemon balm essential oil, Melissa essential oil is often used in skin care formulations to balance moisture and tame oily skin. We added a handful of drops of Melissa oil to our cleansing balm to make it extra friendly to oily and combination skin types.
Organic Niaouli Essential Oil
A cousin to tea tree, niaouli essential oil is often used in skin care products to encourage deep cleansing and encourage healthy, balanced skin.
Organic Virgin Rose Hip Seed Oil
The rich array of essential fatty acids contained within rose hip seed oil makes it perfect for supporting mature skin. It is highly moisturizing and nourishing. Rose Hip Seed Oil is often included in formulations meant to reduce the appearance of scars, wrinkles, and discoloration.
Organic Virgin Coconut Oil
Right now, virgin coconut oil is easily one of the hottest ingredients in the natural beauty world. Used for everything from hair conditioner to makeup remover, natural beauty enthusiasts can’t seem to get enough of this versatile ingredient. In regards to cleansing the skin, virgin coconut makes a great choice due to its unique combination of moisturizing and astringent properties. It also smells incredibly good!
